October Meeting: Dog Sledding in the Arctic

Where: At the Dan Beard Boy Scout Council (10078 Reading Road, Cincinnati, OH)

What: Bud Thomas will present a dog-sledding trip which traversed one of the main islands in the archipelago of Svalbard. Svalbard has glaciated, mountainous terrain and is in the arctic ocean north of Europe at approximately 80 degrees north latitude. The 8-day trip was led by Paul Schurke (of National Geographic fame). Paul and his wife run annual dog sledding trips to the arctic and locally in the US at Wintergreen dog-sledding in Ely Minn.

Short Bio

Bud is an Aerospace Engineer with a career that includes rocket engine designer for the Apollo Lunar Program, the space shuttle and GE Aircraft Engines.

Other Outdoor activities include:

– Mountain Climbing on five of the continents, including Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa,  Mt. Mera in the Himalayas, and being on the first mountaineering team to reach the summit of Two Peaks in Antarctica

– Sailing on the Great lakes and the Pacific Northwest

– Biking, snow shoeing and cross-country skiing

– Aerobatic flying

Bud is married with three children.

He met his wife at a Sierra club meeting!
