Per Brewster Rhoads at 6:31 p.m.tonight:
Just minutes ago we made the tough decision to CANCEL Saturday’s paddle on the Ohio.
We did this in close consultation with the Coast Guard, the national weather service and our local TV weather forecasters. During the day today the forecast projected that the fallout from Hurricane Bill will drop lots of heavy rain starting as soon as 9 am on Saturday, about 3 hours earlier than last night’s forecast.
I recognize that weather forecast projections can be wrong and there is a possibility that the storm could drift to our south and miss us. But Channel 5 said it looks like Bill is aimed for a direct hit on downtown in the middle of our paddle.
Teresa and I will be working as quickly as we can to notify registered paddlers, Finish Line Festival vendors, bus companies, etc. We will post a message on our Facebook page and our website and notify the local press as well.
We will note that the “high water” make up date is Sunday, August 2 – from Coney to the Public Landing. More details on that as they develop.
This was a difficult decision. But none of us want to put lots of paddlers, many of whom paddle once a year, in harms way.
