Saturday February 23; Backpacking School, Workshop I “Backpacking ABC’s: Acquiring Basic Competencies”. This is for women and men of all experience levels.
We will meet at Roads Rivers and Trials, 118 Main Street, Milford, OH 45150, 8:00AM for this 6 ½ hour, hands-on workshop. Bring a brown-bag lunch. This is the first of 3 planned workshops that together will cover everything a new or inexperienced backpacker needs to know. Even seasoned backpackers may pick up a few new tricks! After completing all 3 workshops, Sierra Club Outing leaders will lead the group on a 2-night backpacking trip in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. In this first workshop, participants will learn gear basics – including everything from shelters and sleep systems to food and footwear. You’ll get a lesson on how to select the equipment that is right for you, as well as the chance to test things out for yourself in an indoor setting. You’ll leave with a backpacking handbook, a personal mini-first aid kit which you will assemble during the workshop, and a starter 10-essentials bag. Completion of Workshops I and II is a pre-requisite for the Workshop III-Shake Down trip; completion of all 3 Workshops is a pre-requisite for the Big South Fork trip.
The workshops will be presented by a coed team of certified Sierra Club Outing Leaders along with experts from Roads Rivers and Trails. Class size is limited to 10 people. Fee is $75 which includes all 3 workshops and the 2-night backpacking trip. (You will provide your own food, gear and transportation for the trips. Carpooling is available.) RSVP and $25 deposit will reserve your spot, due by February 9.
