Issue 7 in Hamilton County Passed!

We did it! Sierra Club congratulates the Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority (SORTA) and the YES on ISSUE 7 campaign for a historic victory “at the polls” in 2020!

Thank you to all of our amazing members who volunteered for the campaign and who are helping to promote public transportation in our region. Along with our friends at the Better Bus Coalition, Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber and more, we did something that had never been done before – pass a transit levy in Hamilton County.

A new 0.8 percent sales tax in Hamilton County will be collected starting October 1, and the portion of the City of Cincinnati earnings tax that currently supports SORTA will be eliminated on October 2. SORTA will begin to see revenue from the sales tax on January 1, 2021. This new source of funds will help SORTA begin to implement its Reinventing Metro plan to bring more and better service to bus riders in Hamilton County.

Our work is not done! SORTA needs input from the public to realize its Reinventing Metro plan, and we are expanding our focus to highlight the Sierra Club’s Clean, Green Commute campaign – an effort to move transit fleets away from dirty diesel toward zero-emission vehicles powered by renewable energy. Please join our regular Transportation Committee Zoom calls to find out more! Contact Nathan Alley: [email protected] if you would like more information about these virtual calls!
