Outings List

If you plan to attend an Outing, please read this information.

Note: Following each outing description is a “level-of-difficulty” rating: 1=easy to 4=strenuous. This indicates roughly how difficult an outing is likely to be. If in doubt about your skills or endurance, explore plans with the trip leader first. 

In order to participate on one of the Sierra Club’s outings, you will need to sign a liability waiver. If you would like to read a copy of the waiver prior to the outing call 415-977-5630.  In the interests of facilitating the logistics of some outings, it is customary that participants make carpooling arrangements. The Sierra Club does not have insurance for carpooling arrangements and assumes no liability for them.  Carpooling, ride sharing or anything similar is strictly a private arrangement among the participants. Participants assume the risks associated with this travel.

INCLEMENT WEATHER may cancel an Outing. Be sure to check with a leader before heading out to an Outing if you question the weather.

Thurs. Aug. 23; Day Hike 1-2.  BREAKFAST COULD BE AT 8 OR 9 AM,  followed by a 1-2hr walk/hike on a trail.  Excessive heat could cancel the walk.    Meet at a Frisch’s at the designated time,  for an optional breakfast followed by a one – two hour hike at a near-by park or hiking area at the designated time.   We are usually off the trail by about Noon. We decide where to hike usually Tuesday afternoon before the hike depending on the weather then send around an e-mail with the details.  NOTE: Participants will need to RSVP and leave a contact number and email in case of cancellation due to sudden weather change. Tues. Aug. 28; Service Outing on the Little Miami Bike Path 1-2. We will meet at the Avoca Trailhead at 5:30 PM and work for a few hours maintaining the right of way of the bike path. Sun. Sept. 2; Bike Butler County 2-3. We will meet at 10 AM and ride approximately 26 miles of moderate paced cycling. Bring a lunch, and helmet required. Watch Sierra Club Outings Meetup site for meeting place and details, or contact Barry Randall at 513-607-4515.

Tues. Sept. 4; Service Outing on the Little Miami Bike Path 1-2. We will meet at the Avoca Trailhead at 5 PM and work for a couple of hours maintaining the right of way of the bike path. Sun. Sept. 9; Paddle Outing, Best Local Water 2. We will meet around 10AM to paddle the Little Miami or Great Miami Rivers depending on water levels. We expect to be off the River around 2 PM. All boat types are welcome. Life jackets must be worn at all times while on the river. Helmets must be worn when spray skirts are used. Sat. Sept. 15; Sharon Woods Early Explorers Hike 2. Enjoy an end of Summer brisk 5 mile trek through the woods. We’ll set out from the Sharon Centre parking lot promptly at 9 AM and possibly wander off the beaten (and paved) track a bit. Enter on the Route 42 side of the park. Thurs.-Sun. Sept. 27-30; Backpack in the Big South Fork 2-3. We will meet at 8   AM at the Florence Walmart and travel to BSF. We will hike about 20-25 miles total and be back Sunday evening. Sat. Sept. 29; Glenwood Gardens Get Up N’ Go Hike 2. The seasons are a’changin’ and so is Glenwood Gardens. Join me for an invigorating early fall hike. We leave the gatehouse promptly at 9 AM. Located at the end of Glendale-Milford Rd. at Rt. 4 (next to McDonalds). We’ll hike about 3 miles through a variety of restored ecosystems. Maria Eckhoff 769-5413 before 8 PM if you need directions.

Thurs.-Sun. Oct. 18-21; Backpack Dolly Sods Wilderness, WV 3-4. Approximately 25 miles of intermediate backpacking through a spectacular rocky, high-altitude plateau with sweeping vistas and life forms normally found much farther north.
