Join us for a one-night campout at beautiful Shimps Hollow campground in Germantown Metropark. Although secluded and primitive, Shimps Hollow is a “front country” campground, so participants will have a choice of backpacking into the site, or driving and meeting us there.
Register on our Meetup page.
If you choose to backpack, we’ll meet at 9:00 AM Saturday, April 2, at the Sledding Hill TVT parking area (6206 Boomershine Road) for a three-mile beginner backpack hike to the campground. If you choose to “car camp”, drive and meet us at the campground (7350 Boomershine Road) at 12:00 PM. That afternoon we’ll have some optional activities like day hikes, and instructional demonstrations like fire building and how to do a bear hang. Our experienced Sierra Club leaders will be available to assess your gear if you like, show you the proper way to pitch your tent, or share some of their camp cooking ideas.
There is no fee for this event, but participants must bring their own gear and food. Shimps Hollow is a primitive campground, with a pit toilet and picnic tables. Tent or hammock camping only (no RVs etc.). There is no electricity and no potable water at the site. We will stage some water for the group, but if you’re driving you may want to bring some extra.
We follow Leave No Trace principles, so please leave you axes, saws any noisy electronics at home.
We ask that that all participants be fully vaccinated, and masks are at the participants discretion for this outdoor event. Please no pets or young children at this event.
