The Sierra Club supports the suspension of bus fares and loading passengers from the rear of the bus during the coronavirus pandemic. This helps reduce the close interaction between drivers and passengers since paying the fare requires passengers to be within inches of the driver. Keeping drivers and passengers, many of whom are essential workers keeping us all safe, and people who need the bus to access food and medicine, especially now that so many are laid off or furloughed.
It has been suggested that this fare suspension be eliminated. We disagree and urge the SORTA (Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority) Board to keep the fare suspension until we can all travel safely. We understand that the SORTA Board is meeting Friday, April 9 to consider this matter. Please view our letter to SORTA here.
Update (04/10/20): The City of Cincinnati has requested that Metro resume fare collection on all Metro buses and Access vehicles in the interest of public safety, effective Sunday, April 12, 2020. The Miami Group Sierra Club does not support the reintroduction of fare collection during the coronavirus pandemic.
