Winter backpacking beautiful Big South Fork

In early January six hardy souls braved the chilly weather for a rewarding Sierra Club backpacking trip to Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area in Tennessee. Sunny skies and snowy trails greeted them as they hiked to Slave Falls and Needle Arch to camp at Jake’s Place, an abandoned farmstead. The highlight of the trip was the Twin Arches Loop trail, with its spectacular rock formations and a welcome rest stop at Charit Creek Lodge.
