Allan W. Sawtelle died on October 23, 2015 at the Maple Knoll Community in Springdale, OH. Allan was born on May 30, 1916 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a proud alumnus of Hartwell High School. As an engineering student at UC, Allan met the love of his life, Bobbie Irion. After his graduation in June they were married on August 6, 1939. During WWII he worked for Tool Steel (now Xtek) until he was drafted into the Navy, where he served until the end of the war. The family moved to Wyoming OH in 1945. Allan began a small business to make and sell Rigid Live Centers.
Clara I. Sawtelle, known to all as “Bobbie,” was born on June 25, 1920 in Charleston, WV. Her father died when she was young and her mother moved the family to Cincinnati to complete her education at UC and to teach in the Cincinnati school system. As a student at UC Bobbie met the love of her life, Allan W. Sawtelle, and they were married on August 6, 1939. The Sawtelles moved to Wyoming OH in 1945. A stay at home mom, Bobbie was very active in community organizations including PTA, Cub Scouts, United Cerebral Palsy, and the Cincinnati Zoo. She was also very active with her husband in the outdoor activities of the Sierra Club.
Allan and Bobbie were leaders in the outdoor activities of the Miami Group Sierra Club until she suffered a stroke in 2000. Allan and Bobbie celebrated 75 years of marriage on August 6, 2014, before she passed away on January 23 of 2015.
