In this new feature we introduce a Sierra Club Miami Group member and ask them to tell us a little bit about themselves and their experience with Sierra Club. This month we introduce Elena Teran, one of our newest Outings leaders.
What inspired you to become an active Sierra Club member?
When I tell people about my backpacking adventures, they say they’d like to try it but don’t have gear or know-how to do it. A fellow Outings Leader invited me to lead groups for the Sierra Club so I thought this would be the perfect way to teach others.
What skills/talents do you feel you bring to the Group?
Mountain biking, backpacking, hiking and organizational leadership. Also just eagerness to just show up and get others involved.
What Group activities have you enjoyed the most?
Going on a backpacking trip with people who I don’t know but who love the outdoors as much as I do and then heading back home as friends. There’s something about sitting around a fire and exchanging stories that connects us as humans.
What do you feel are, or should be, the priorities for our Group?
Intentional connection with younger generations.
What would you like to say to our members to encourage them to become more involved in Miami Group Sierra Club?
Now, more than ever, we need your voice to compel our neighbors to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places of the earth. It starts by sparking connection to the outdoors so help us do that.
