Outings leaders complete wilderness first aid training

This past month four Miami Group Outings Leaders participated in a two-day Wilderness First Aid course at Camp Stony Brook in Waynesville, Ohio. Organized by Summit Trek and Travel and Outdoor Adventure Connection, the SOLO training prepared students to handle outdoor emergencies, focusing on skills of: response and assessment, musculoskeletal injuries, environmental emergencies, soft tissue injuries, and medical emergencies. A total of 25 participants from all over the Midwest took part in the training conducted by experienced first responders.

Many backcountry emergencies are preventable, and even when bad things happen, sometimes the wrong care can make things worse. By learning a few basic skills, we hope our outings leaders can make the difference between a good adventure story and a bad ending … and maybe even save a life.

A special thanks to Girl Scouts of Western Ohio for making beautiful Camp Stony Brook available for this event.
