Sam Cauffield died unexpectedly at his home August 31, 2018. He was born November 26, 1931 in Pasadena, California. Sam grew up on a chicken farm in Southern California. Reportedly, there was a tree in the middle of the house where he lived. Sam was the middle of three children. Sam went to the University of Redlands and completed a degree in Engineering. He was then drafted and spent three years working in a radio tower in Japan. After returning to the United states, he married Joyce Van Buskirk. Sam then completed a master of business degree at the University of California. His oldest child, Margaret was born while Sam was in graduate school. Sam first worked on telephone poles and then at Procter and Gamble. During this time, Sam fathered two other children, Catherine and Charles. All three children were born in California. Sam and his family were then transferred to Cincinnati by Procter and Gamble. He worked at Procter and Gamble until he retired at the age of 62.
Sam had an interest in photography from a young age and spent a lot of time taking pictures. After retiring from Procter and Gamble, he took professional photography lessons in Arizona. Sam then became involved in taking wedding pictures for family and friends. Sam was the photographer at St. John’s Unitarian Church where he was a member for many years.
As a younger man, Sam had a Porsche and belonged to a Porsche club. Sam and Joyce went on Porsche rallies. Over the years, Sam and Joyce took several trips to California and Akron, Ohio to visit relatives and friends. In Sam’s later years, he enjoyed reading mysteries and watching the news on television. Sam especially liked his aide, of approximately five years, Dorla Phillips.
Sam volunteer for many years with the Sierra Club.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin and Ellen Cauffield, his wife of 61 years, Joyce Van Buskirk Caulfield, his daughter Catherine Cauffield and his brother, James Cauffield. He is survived by his daughter, Margaret (Tim) Christman, son Charles Cauffield, sister Mary Amundson, other relatives and friends.
