What will MSD give you for Christmas?

The holiday season is also MSD’s budget season. By law, MSD’s 2026 budget must be adopted by December 31, 2025. Usually, by mid-October, MSD’s budget request has been released, but as of October 20, 2025, we are still waiting for MSD’s 2026 Budget Request. We all love waiting for December 25 to see what we’ll find under the tree, but last-minute surprises are no way to make public policy.

MSD’s budget may contain very good news for ratepayers and the environment. Since May, MSD has been proposing and discussing a package of reforms that would motivate landowners to keep their stormwater out of the combined sewers and lessen the financial burden on residential ratepayers.

Or, MSD’s budget may contain bad news, continuing to choose slow and expensive stormwater improvements and making residential customers pay for it.

If the Grinch’s heart can grow three sizes, then so can MSD’s. And you can help! Tell the County Commissioners that residents are looking to them for some good news on sewer rates and stormwater management this holiday season.
